A while ago, I was sending an email to my team, and I put an emoji in the middle of the message 😅 I thought it would make things feel friendly, but when I reread it, I wondered if it looked unprofessional. Have you ever felt that way?

Using emojis at work can be tricky. Sometimes they make things feel warm and approachable, but other times they can seem unprofessional. Especially when you are emailing someone new or in a more formal context, the wrong emoji can give the wrong impression.

Here are a few simple tips. If you are unsure, do not use an emoji. Only use simple, polite emojis like ✅, 💡, or 🙏 in casual internal messages. Funny or playful emojis usually do not belong in formal emails.
