Neoclouds: A New Engineering Opportunity

The AI boom is creating opportunities not just for software engineers, since a huge physical infrastructure layer is being developed beneath it; in my view, the most exciting engineering opportunities of the next decade will arise there.

A key element of this infrastructure is the emergence of neoclouds. Neoclouds are companies that provide cloud infrastructure and focus mainly on high-performance computing and AI workloads. Unlike traditional cloud platforms that cater to a wide variety of applications, many neocloud providers emphasize GPU clusters, AI training and inference, high-speed networking, advanced cooling, power supply, and data center infrastructure.

What strikes me as especially interesting is that this area is multidisciplinary. Constructing and running large-scale AI infrastructure involves much more than just GPUs and software. Electrical engineers are needed for power systems and power distribution. Mechanical engineers play a vital role in cooling and in thermal management. Electronics and mechatronics engineers work on hardware, control systems, and reliability. Network engineers manage high-bandwidth, low-latency communication between thousands of accelerators. Computer and hardware engineers handle the servers, storage, architecture, deployment, and performance optimization.

In my opinion, this represents one of the best long-term opportunities for engineers who want to work on AI’s physical foundation. As models grow, inference demand rises, and as more companies build AI-native products, the need for efficient computing infrastructure will keep creating challenging engineering problems with real economic value.

Although AI might appear to be a software revolution from the outside, it also involves huge engineering challenges across power, heat, networking, electronics, hardware, and physical infrastructure. I think engineers at this intersection have a great opportunity to develop valuable expertise, make a real difference, and work in a market where strong technical abilities are well rewarded.
