Be professional, but not stiff

When we first step into the workplace, it is easy to think that being professional means being cold and overly serious. The truth is, they are not the same.

Being professional means:

  • Respecting other people’s time.
  • Communicating politely and clearly.
  • Following the rules and culture of the organization.

Being stiff means:

  • Creating unnecessary distance.
  • Removing warmth and human connection from interactions.
  • Sometimes even making collaboration harder.

Something I wish I had known earlier: You can be professional and still stay warm and approachable. A simple hello, a smile, or a small word of appreciation can make the workplace more comfortable for everyone.

If you are just starting your career, remember:

  • Respect professional boundaries.
  • But do not forget the human side of work.

Your technical skills matter. Your communication and how you make others feel matter just as much.
