When Kids Know More Than Their Parents

Sometimes, our children seem to live in a world we barely recognize. They speak fluently about AI tools, new apps, and digital trends that we’ve only just heard of.

And that’s okay. They were born into this world; we adapted to it.

But as parents, it can feel uncomfortable when your child knows more about technology than you do. So, what can we do?

Be curious, not defensive: Instead of feeling left behind, use their knowledge as an opportunity to learn together.

Ask them to teach you: It’s a powerful way to build connection and mutual respect, and it shows that learning never stops.

Guide the “how,” not just the “what.”: Even if they know the tools better, you know the values, boundaries, and life lessons that give those tools meaning.

The digital generation doesn’t need us to be experts in every app; they need us to be wise in how we use them. Let’s raise kids who are not just tech-savvy, but thoughtful, responsible, and human in a world shaped by technology.

Disclaimer: I’m not a parent myself, but I deeply admire those who are navigating this new digital landscape with care. digital parenting might be one of the most important skills of our time.
